I woke up craving comfort this morning, and French toast is proof that you don’t need fancy ingredients to create something rich and decadent at home. With just a few pantry ingredients like eggs, milk, bread, a splash of vanilla, and cinnamon, you can turn rich slices or brioche (or sandwich bread, if that’s what you have!) into golden, custardy perfection. This easy French toast recipe comes together in minutes, turning busy mornings into diner-style perfection or upping your weekend brunch game. Serve with a drizzle of maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, or some fresh berries for a breakfast that feels indulgent yet effortless.

  • 2 Tbsp butter, plus more for serving, divided, use more if needed
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 pinch salt

  • Heat a skillet over medium/medium-low heat with a bit of butter.
  • Working in batches of one or two at a time, dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture for a few seconds until wet, but not soaked and breaking apart, then fry in the skillet for a few minutes on each side until golden brown. Add more butter to the skillet as you need.
  • Place fully cooked slices on an oven-safe plate and keep in a warm oven or air fryer while you're working.
  • Serve cooked toast with pats of cold butter, drizzle with syrup, and sprinkle with powdered sugar, if desired.
